This research is a descriptive survey which examined the causes of suicidal ideation among students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho. Two hundred and ten questionnaire forms were distributed to respondents, but only two hundred were returned and analysed. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. The samples were administered with researchers-developed instrument namely: “Questionnaire on Causes of Suicidal Ideation (QCSI)”. The findings of the study revealed that abuse of alcohol or drugs, low academic performance, and poor study habits were the major emphasized causes of suicidal ideation among respondents. The study revealed that there were significant differences on the causes of suicidal ideation among respondents based on gender and religion; and the study also revealed that there were no significant differences on the causes of suicidal ideation among respondents based on age and place of residence. It was recommended that school counsellors should provide adequate counselling to students irrespective of their gender and religious affiliations on the causes of suicidal ideation through information and orientation services in schools. Improved study habits, and adequate preparation towards their academic studies can help students to overcome the incidents of suicidal ideation and make their learning effective.
