Abstract

The importance of organizational citizenship behaviours for organizational success and outcomes have been well emphasized in literature. It has been considered crucial to the survival of organizations in todays dynamic business locale. Although these set of behaviours are mutually beneficial to both organizations and employees, many researchers paid little attention to the benefits of organizational citizenship behaviours to the individual employees. The current paper aimed to accentuate the importance of organizational citizenship behaviours to the individual employees. Specifically, it examined the meaning of organizational citizenship behaviours, its dimensions, theoretical basis, the needs of the employees and the benefits of organizational citizenship behaviours to the individual employees. This paper proposed that the benefits of organizational citizenship behaviours to each employee can be inferred from the types of behaviours involved and the context in which such behaviours were enacted. It was concluded and recommended that organizational citizenship behaviours provide intrinsic and extrinsic benefits to the individual employees and therefore should not be seen as solely beneficial to the organizations at the expense of their employees.
