Abstract

The family plays a key role in young people’s behaviour both now and in the future. This study examined the influence of parents’ drinking habitson in-school adolescents’ present and future drinking habits. The research design is a cross-sectional descriptive study of 337 senior secondary students randomly selected from ten high schools in Delta North Senatorial Districts, South-South, Nigeria. A self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain data from the respondents. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result showed the number of parents who drink, how and where the adolescents were introduced to alcohol or ‘tasted ‘alcohol for the first time and those who have continued after their first experience. The results also indicated those who have not tasted alcohol but intend to do so in the future. There was a significant association between the alcohol drinking status of respondents and that of their parents. Parent-child dynamism should be consideredon alcohol harm reduction among young people.
